Happy New Year! I hope you all had fun celebrating the arrival of 2015. I wanted to pop in and chat fitness with you now that the new year is here. I don’t usually refer to goals as “resolutions” because I find myself constantly setting and revisiting goals throughout the year. By now we all know “resolutions” have a January-only stigma but it is a great time to think about what goals we want to make (and keep) in the year ahead. I wanted to share a few of mine with you!
Improve Flexibility Flexibility is incredibly important and is often overlooked. The three pillars of fitness are strength, cardiovascular conditioning and flexibility. For years I ignored this important fact, and on top of that I am naturally STIFF. Like…cardboard box stiff. Even when I was a young Les. No bueno. When I started doing PiYo last summer, I noticed a lot of improvement, but I’m still not “flexible” by any stretch of the imagination. This year I really want to continue increasing my flexibility so I can have improved mobility and strength.
Don’t laugh at my sad, sad pigeon pose.Set a new half-marathon PR My first half was the Seattle Rock n’ Roll in 2012. I didn’t really care about time or pace, at the time I just wanted to finish and prove to myself I could reach a stretch goal. Did it. Then I had a love/hate relationship with running and stopped for awhile. In February 2014 I ran the Disney Princess Half at Disney World (which was a BLAST) and just wanted to improve upon my first half time. To my surprise, I ended up setting a new PR by almost 15 minutes! I really want to take the time to properly train and focus on speed. I see a sub 2-hour half marathon in the books for 2015 🙂
I’m also hoping I get better at selfies in 2015. Probably not going to happen.Teach Fitness Again I haven’t spoken too much about my history as a Personal Trainer, mainly because I became really burnt out, and had a hard time balancing being a trainer with working full time (and now school on top of that). In the spring of 2014, I decided to take some time off from training. But I miss it like crazy. I miss having clients, and sharing their successes with them. I miss teaching, inspiring and supporting. I need it back in my life. I would LOVE to start working in the gym again as a Group Exercise Instructor. I’m hoping to put my fitness certifications to good use again in 2015.
Do more HIIT I totally fell into the habit of valuing quantity over quality with my workouts. They became lengthy, and lacked intensity…womp, womp. With work being crazy busy, winter quarter starting up soon and dedicating time to this blog, ain’t nobody (meaning me) got time for inefficient workouts. When I head back to work next week, I’ll have 30-40 minutes each day to devote to my workouts, which is plenty of time if I use it wisely. I’m getting back to my roots of quick, sweaty circuits and blitzes of HIIT. I’m also very excited for the tips in Gina’s book HIIT It!
More Fitness Posts Last, but certainly not least I want to devote more posts here on the blog to fitness. It’s no secret that I love food, and I’ve been busting out recipes like a mad woman for you all to enjoy. That being said, I do want to post more fitness-related content as well (workouts, tips, research, etc.). I have more fitness posts on deck for 2015 – but don’t worry foodies I’ll still be posting recipes too.
In the past, I’ve made myself paper vision boards (mostly covered in quotes and pictures of Beyonce…I digress) but this year, I decided to make my inspiration board on Pinterest so I could share it with all of you. Check it out here – and follow me on Pinterest while you’re at it!
I would love to learn more about what your health/fitness/personal goals are for 2015 so I can make sure the content on TBB helps you achieve them!
What are some of your goals for 2015?
Do you like creating vision boards? If so, link it below!
xoxo,
Les
