Give your smoothie a nutritious boost by adding turmeric! This creamy turmeric smoothie makes an amazing light breakfast or snack and provides a clean boost of energy.
Alright friends, let’s talk about something that I’m sure we can all be a little better at: being nice to ourselves.
I know, I’m coming at you hot today but lately self-care is something I have become increasingly aware of and more passionate about. The fact that I am just now recognizing the importance of self-care is absolutely insane, since I write a “healthy living blog” and have been “passionate about wellness” for years now. But I am finally realizing that my previous approach to wellness didn’t really work for me. Slowly but surely, I am getting better at learning what actually makes me feel good as a human and what doesn’t.
Don’t get me wrong, I am far from perfect. I’m not walking around treating myself with Mother Theresa kindness and compassion, but I am becoming increasingly more aware of the connection between how I treat myself and how I feel.
To say I haven’t been nice to myself since…forever would be a major understatement. Like Ms. Norbury (Tina Fey) in Mean Girls, I’m a pusher. But 99.9% of the time, the person I’m pushing to the brink of craziness is myself. Until recently, all acts of self-care were always things I did to “fix” aspects of myself. I decide I don’t like my cellulite, so I workout like a mad woman for years on end. I don’t like how bloated I feel after eating certain foods, so I stop eating them. I don’t like the way my nails peel, so I give myself manis on the reg to cover them up.
Lately I have started to shift my perspective a little bit. Instead of exercising and making certain food choices because I still feel like I have aspects of my body I want to “fix” I use my workouts as a stress reliever, and because I like feeling strong. Instead of focusing on foods that are off limits because I’m worried about what they’ll do to my body, I’m focusing more on eating food that gives me energy and makes me feel good. Instead of obsessing over my peely nails and dry cuticles, I give myself manis because a fresh coat of nail polish feels damn good, and I like how put together it makes me feel.
Perspective, friends. Perspective.
Again, I am far from perfect and still have my fair share of moments where I’m beating myself up. But the awareness of how good it feels to simply treat myself well has really redefined my personal view of wellness. I am really excited to share this view with you.
So what does all of this have to do with this smoothie? This recipe is one of those things that just makes me feel good. Turmeric has been my JAM lately. Thanks to its high concentrations of the compound curcumin, turmeric is believed to have a range of health benefits including relief from headaches, digestive issues and inflammation. I’m not (yet) an RD so I can’t endorse those claims but I have been loving turmeric as an addition to my regular diet and have noticed my migraines haven’t been nearly as bad since introducing it.
So show yourself a little extra self-care by whipping up this creamy delight!
- ½ Cup Frozen Pineapple
- ½ Frozen Banana
- ½ Inch Fresh Ginger, Grated
- ¾ Cup Chai Tea Concentrate (or sub strong brewed Chai tea)
- ½ Cup Almond or Coconut Milk
- Juice of ½ Lime
- ¼ Teaspoon Ground Turmeric
- 1 Scoop Vanilla Protein Powder OR ½ Cup Plain Yogurt
- Optional: Coconut Flakes for Garnish
- Combine all ingredients in a blender, and blend until smooth. If the mixture is too thick, add a bit more almond milk. Garnish with coconut flakes.
Your Turn:
- What are some of your ways to practice self-care?
- What does “wellness” mean to you?
Turmeric is the way to bring some self love 😉 And a bright sunshine-y smoothie is perfect for that too! Turmeric is the feel good elixir!
My thoughts exactly! 🙂
I love this and it’s definitely a mindshift I’ve been making over the past few years in a big way. As a fellow driven #ladyboss I often focused on my attention into fixing “myself” instead of pouring my heart and energy into my passions. Once I realized that I could be better if I was nicer to myself then things started to click.
Anywhoo you’re awesome, don’t forget it and this smoothie looks fab. Xo
YAS. It is definitely a process to go through that kind of mindset shift, but so worth it. You are awesome too lady!
Yum! Always looking for new smoothie ideas! Thanks!
Great! There will be plenty more where this came from 🙂
Wondering if the taste is too strong or if the fruit balances it all out? Hope you don’t mind if I share your post to my blog.
Hi Suzi – yes the fruit balances out the taste here. And yes, as long as you link back to my original post I am fine with you sharing. Thanks for asking! 🙂
Love the color! And I love turmeric!
Hi Les! Well this post is a breath of fresh air. I love the thought of taking care of yourself with things that aren’t related to appearance. And turmeric is all the rage these days! I have some supplements containing it but would love to eat it instead. Thanks for this one! Happy Friday!
I made this smoothie this morning! I added some greens, flaxseed and protein powder to make it filling. So good! Thank you for recipe and for the reminder to practice self care!
Very well said! I love that you brought up perspective into this. I also used to workout and eat (or not eat) certain things to try and improve myself. Now, I focus on eating the right nutrition to fuel my body for long runs and working out to build strength simply because I love feeling strong and healthy. Thank you so much for sharing this and I can’t wait to try tumeric!
Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment Kellen! I am so glad you can relate, and I hope you love turmeric when you try it 🙂
I never would have thought to put turmeric in a smoothie. Wow. I’ll blush and admit that I only thought of it as something to brighten the colour of my homemade pickles. Thank you for this!
You can put turmeric in just about anything!
This sounds fantastic! How yummy!
Thanks so much!
This looks delicious! And the photos are GORGEOUS 🙂
Thank you Sarah! 🙂
This looks so good! And I’ve been hearing such good things about turmeric lately!
Thanks Karin! It really is a great spice
I would never have thought of adding this spice to a smoothie… but the colors and your pics make it look delicious! What a creative way to add this to your diet!
It makes such a great addition to smoothies – thanks so much!

Thanks Christine! It seemed like a fitting message heading into Valentine’s Day weekend. Smoothies are a great way to sneak in some extra turmeric 🙂
This sounds very good and flavourful!

I’ve never tried turmeric in a smoothie. Thank you for pointing some of the great health benefits.

This looks like such a delicious smoothie – adding it to the list for one of my upcoming morning smoothie recipes! Turmeric sounds like the perfect little kick to wake up to.
That’s the best way to describe it! It is the perfect little kick
I LOVELOVELOVE this post girl! I am notorious for making choices based on areas of my body I want to fix. I defs need to work on self care!
AND I need to try turmeric in a smoothie. Seriously, this just blew my mind!
Thank you so much Taylor! You are fab and deserve all the self care 🙂
I JUST made it and tried it! It’s AMAZINGLY GOOD! The taste is strange and new to me, yet SO GOOD! Thank you so much for sharing your experiences and such a delicious recipe. I am looking forward to eating better and better and to enjoy that process.
Awesome – I’m so glad you liked it! Turmeric is a little different, but so tasty with the fruit!
SOUNDS GREAT AND YUMMY. Is it ok to make if you are a Dibeties ?
Evelyn
Hi Evelyn! I would recommend talking to your doctor about that <3
Thanks for this recipe, I can’t wait to try it.
So glad you mentioned about taking care of yourself. That has been my mantra, especially to my female friends who seem to take care of everyone else first. It is not selfish to take care of oneself, quite the contrary, because as the saying goes, with my paraphrasing, “You can’t give from an empty cup.”
I just want to add that magnesium goes a long way to helping migraines too. Check out their connection to estrogen dominance which magnesium helps also. Be well!
Thank you so much Jeane! Sometimes self-care is hard to prioritize but it is so worth it. Magnesium is great! I love drinking Natural Calm.
Hi I have been doing a similar smoothie since the beginning of the year, and I haven’t felt so good in years
I am so happy to hear that! I feel a lot better when I consume turmeric regularly too 🙂
I subbed the pineapple for half a grapefruit and the chai for English breakfast tea, with an additional half frozen banana – so amazing! Thank you!
Those sound like awesome substitutions!
