Is your yoga mat getting a little funky? Freshen it up with this easy DIY yoga mat spray.
Do you enjoy doing yoga? If so, what is your favorite type of yoga to practice? I’m a heated vinyasa kind of girl. I love doing yoga in a ridiculously warm room moving through a fast, powerful flow. There’s enough going on to keep me engaged and interested (I have the attention span of a toddler), yet it is still challenging mentally and physically.
After a long hiatus, I recently reintroduced regular vinyasa flows into my weekly routine. While it has worked wonders for my core strength and (lack of) flexibility, it has done a number on my yoga mat. Can I be real with you guys? My mat was pretty ripe. If you enjoy heated yoga too, I’m sure you can relate.Β
To freshen things up a bit, I mixed up my own yoga mat spray. It’s simple, natural and has a bright citrusy scent. Nothing says “clean” like citrus right? The perfect scent for cleaning up our funky mats π
Check out my video showing you how to make DIY Yoga Mat Spray
To use just spritz some spray on your mat, wipe off with a damp towel and let it dry. If citrus isn’t your jam, feel free to mix it up with the essential oils of your choice. Let me know what fun blends you come up with!
- 2 oz. Glass Spray Bottle
- ~1 oz. Filtered Water
- ~1 oz Witch Hazel (alcohol free)
- Tea Tree Oil
- Scented Essential Oils of Choice - I used grapefruit and sweet orange oil
- Fill the spray bottle with half filtered water, and half witch hazel.
- Add 3 drops of tea tree oil, and 10 drops of grapefruit and sweet orange essential oil each.
- Screw the nozzle back onto the bottle, and shake to mix.
- To use, generously spritz spray on yoga mat. Wipe with a damp cloth, and allow to dry. Store spray in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight.
Your Turn:
- Do you practice yoga?
- What are some of your favorite scents?

I’m bad at cleaning my mat and keep it rolled out 24/7. It’s dirty…even though I have sprays to clean it, I rarely do π Hahaha!
I’m not as good about it as I should be either. Thankfully having this on hand has helped!
Oooooh this sounds so lovely! I definitely need to make some mat spray, I’ve cleaned mine an embarrassingly small amount of times hahaha. I do yoga at home and it has become one of my favourite things. Sometimes I do videos, but my favourite is when I can turn on music, hop on the mat, and just let my body take over and flow. Feels so amazing.
Grapefruit and sweet orange sounds like a beautiful energizing combo!!
That is awesome Leah! I definitely admire the fact that you can hop on the mat and do your own thing. I definitely hope to get to that point eventually π
I really need to make this because I don’t remember the last time I cleaned my mat… that’s bad! Haha!

Haha no judgement here. I was the same way!
I will for sure have to try this!! I am thinking a nice clean lavender and vanilla might be a good scent. π
Ooh lavender and vanilla would be lovely. I may need to mix that up next!
I like this combination, and I’m going to try it once my current mix runs out. I’ve never tried witchhazel before, I usually do water+vinegar+essential oil and I like it. It’d be nice to see how a witch hazel mix works. Thanks for sharing!
Vinegar works great as well! Witch Hazel just doesn’t have the distinctive smell like vinegar π
This is a really good idea! It’s super gross but sometimes I forget to wipe down my yoga mat properly. Nobody wants a sweaty and stinky yoga mat!
It happens to the best of us!
ok I’m so making this and taking it to the yoga studio in my bag. I always clean down my mat before using it so this is great!
Yay! I hope you love it π
Ooooo I need to make this! Amazing, I didn’t even know this was a thing!!
I know, it’s so simple right?
I LOVE THIS IDEA! I USUALLY SPRITZ MINE WITH LAVENDER ROOM SPRAY WHICH CAN SOMETIMES BE A LITTLE OVERWHELMING DEPENDING ON HOW CRAZY I GET WITH IT (OR IF I FORGET I ALREADY SPRAYED MY MAT). I TRY TO PRACTICE YOGA EVERY DAY TO SOME EXTENT … OTHERWISE I WALK LIKE A HUNCHBACK. I CANNOT GET ENOUGH OF LAVENDER π
A few drops of lavender essential oil instead of the citrus oils would be lovely in this! I love doing yoga for the same reason π
I need to get some witch hazel and then I’m totally making this!
Let me know if you do! Witch hazel also makes a great base for facial toner π
I’m so excited for another way to use essential oils!
Yes! I’m always looking for new ways to use up essential oils. What are your favorite scents?
OoooHHH This is so good! I honestly never thought about this, but I have heard certain scents in the air really help improve your practice. I practice yoga about 5 times a week. Its my favorite way to relax after such a long day. My favorite scents are lavender, and anything citrusy!
Totally! The yoga studio I go to passes out cool towels with lemon essential oil at the end of class and it is heavenly. And I totally agree with you – citrus scents are amazing!
Well this is freakin’ fantastic! I haven’t done vinyasa yoga but I’ve been curious about it. I wish my gym had different styles but we just have “YOGA”. lol so being the yoga newb that I am, I have no idea what I’m even doing. I am def starting to love it though! Class Wednesday night π (and I love your mat!!)
Whoop whoop! Namaste, friend. Also check out Yoga with Adriene on Youtube. She posts awesome videos that I love following along with at home. And thank you! The mat is from Tone it Up π
Love this! I’m just starting to get into yoga, but I can already tell I’ll be glad I saw this post soon enough. Thanks!
That’s great! What kind of yoga are you doing?
How funny! I posted my yoga mat cleaner recipe this week too! Great minds π
Great minds totally think alike! π
This is brilliant! =) I am always looking for DIY sprays and products, and this one for my yoga mat is perfect. Thank you!
Thanks Aarika! I’m a huge fan of DIY too, and plan to do more in the future π
This is such a great idea!! I know cleaning my mat is important but unless they have spray at the studio I often forget to wipe it down after my practice. I would love to try and make this mat spray on my own, it sounds so refreshing and natural!
Yes! It’s definitely good to have your own on hand π And it is nice to know what is actually going into it!
I love to use Lemon, Lemongrass, and Cedar wood essential oils. Sometimes I put a drop or two of Lavender to add some extra boost to my savasana.
Yes! Love all of those scents π
