A dairy-free homemade peppermint mocha recipe that has just a few simple ingredients. It’s easy to make and much better for you than what you’d find at a coffee shop!
The fact that December is now here completely blows my mind. Where exactly has 2015 gone? Wasn’t it just spring a few weeks ago? Craziness, I tell ya.Β
A few weeks back I received a request from a reader on my Facebook page (please be sure to give it a like if you haven’t already!) to share a recipe for a healthier holiday coffee creamer alternative. Challenge accepted.Β
I am a huge fan of making coffee at home. Every night before bed, I prepare my coffee pot and set the brew timer to coincide with my alarm clock. The smell of fresh coffee fills my house and lures me out of bed, which is especially helpful during the cold, dark fall and winter mornings. Depending on the season, I add a few mix-ins to my coffee to make it a little more exciting. For the past few months, I’ve been all about the pumpkin spice (get the recipe for my healthy pumpkin spice creamer here). But pumpkin spice season is officially over, friends.
‘Tis the season, for the peppermint mocha. Ugh, I just love them. I can toss back a peppermint mocha in two gulps like it’s nothing.Β
This peppermint mocha is a breeze to throw together,Β requiring little to no effort. Especially helpful for groggy mornings π AmazingΒ seasonal flavors melt together in a warm, chocolatey pick-me-up, minus all of the added sugars in the original coffee shop version and artificial sweeteners in the “skinny” version.Β
There ain’t nothing skinny about this peppermint mocha – just wholesome ingredients your body can actually recognize for a boost of clean energy in the morning. Or whenever you like to drink your coffee. If you’re really trying to get fancy, you could make some cold brew and warm it up for a super smooth, delicious mocha. Or even leave it iced if that’s what you’re into. Oh you fancy, huh?
So brew up some coffee and whip up a warm mug of goodness that tastes like chocolate, Christmas and happiness all in one. Because let’s be real, that’s exactly what peppermint mochas taste like.
- 1 Cup Unsweetened Almond Milk (or milk of choice)
- 3 Tablespoons Honey (sub maple syrup for vegan)
- ¼ Teaspoon Peppermint Extract
- 2 Tablespoons Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
- ½ Teaspoon Coconut Oil, melted
- ¼ Cup Peppermint Coffee Creamer
- 1 Cup Brewed Coffee or Espresso
- In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the almond milk, honey, peppermint extract and cocoa powder, Whisk until warmed through, and honey and cocoa powder are dissolved.
- Transfer mixture to a blender and add coconut oil. Blend until coconut oil is emulsified with the chocolate mixture.
- Combine ¼ cup creamer with 1 cup of coffee to make a single serving peppermint mocha. Store the remaining creamer in a sealed container in the fridge for up to five days.
Your Turn:
- What’s your favorite festive coffee drink?
- Do you usually make your own coffee at home, or do you prefer coffee shops?
Yummmmmmm so glad peppermint mocha season is here! Gorgeous photos Les.
I can COMPLETELY relate to setting coffee the night before. This morning I was literally contemplating whether or not I should move the coffee pot station upstairs to my bedroom. Not even joking. I kind of want to…
I mean, I would support that decision. A few years ago I lived in a 450 square foot studio apartment, so my coffee pot literally was in the same room as me. I definitely wasn’t complaining when it came to that wake up call!
Peppermint season is here! Yum!
Exactly! Love peppermint π
Nothing screams holiday season like a delicious peppermint mocha!!! AND A HEALTHY ONE?!?!? YESSSSSSS!
I’m saying! Peppermint mochas are a trademark of the season π
I’m not a coffee drinker but this looks SO delicious! Nice that it is healthy!
Thanks Kim! π
I love this! What kind of coffee do you like? I bought some from a coffee shop near my house and I liked it, but didn’t love it. I’m on the hunt for some more now that the bag is almost done.
Also, double-thumbs-up to not using gross, artificial flavoring. The real stuff is the best! π
Ooooh good question…to be honest, I’m a bad Seattleite aka I’m not that fancy and usually buy my coffee from Trader Joe’s. It’s just so darn affordable to get organic coffee there!
We are totally twinning on the peppermint mochas! Love your take on it!
And your smoothie version looks AMAZING! <3
Omgπ I just bought some peppermint extract the other day, so I’m so glad you made this! I might have to have a little mocha treat as my 3 p.m. pick-me-up today π Beautiful as always, Les!
Thanks so much Emilie! And yes, peppermint extract is a must-have this time of year π
Love this recipe! Definitely giving this a try asap!
Thank you so much Jennifer! I hope you love it π
Oh my goodness! Yes please! This looks amazing and I love that you made it dairy free. I drink my coffee with almond milk as well… it’s amazing. Also, I love that you didn’t make this ‘skinny’ but rather made it wholesome, healthy and nourishing. All about that π And the fact that you set your alarm clock and coffee maker for the same time is beyond amazing! What a great way to wake up!
Lol It is the only way I can bribe myself out of bed, especially during the winter! π And I’m so glad you agree with me on the wholesome vs. skinny!
this looks really good! I wish I liked coffee though lol. You should make a healthy hot chocolate recipe!
This recipe would make yummy peppermint hot chocolate! Just decrease the honey to 1-2 Tablespoons and have the creamer on its own π
I love that this is made with whole food ingredients, none of the fake stuff! It irks me when people associate “skinny” with healthy!
Thank you so much Rachel! I totally agree, skinny is not synonymous with health.
Eeeee! Chocolate peppermint is my favorite flavor of the season, hands down!
Love the idea of making a “creamer” for a super quick way to enjoy the ULTIMATE delicious-ness!! I’m with you in the two-gulp club! π
Thanks so much Deanna!
